The New York Yankees suffered a 1-0 loss against the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the ALDS, and fans are calling out Austin Wells’ decision in a crucial moment.

Jonathan Aranda’s third-inning home run was enough for the Tampa Bay Rays to claim a Game 1 victory against the New York Yankees in the ALDS. Both teams struggled to score during the game, but New York had one opportunity which could have changed the game.

Drew Rasmussen was incredible on the night for the Rays. The pitcher was in the process of pitching a no-hitter, which was broken in the eighth inning by Austin Wells. His decision to not settle for second base after a hit, though, is now being widely criticised online.

Austin Wells’ decision to go for third base on a grounder has drawn heavy backlash from fans online

When it comes to playoff baseball, seemingly small decisions can make a big difference. Wells hit a double against Rasmussen with two outs on the board in the 8th inning. He tried to stretch it to a triple to get into an even better scoring position, which resulted in a groundout.

In a game that was very close thanks to some excellent pitching from New York, this example of poor base-running led to fans online questioning the Yankees’ catcher.

“What are you doing bro? We learn this day ONE of baseball. You never, ever make the last out at 3rd,” one fan said in reply to Well’s decision. “I am so tired of bad base running in baseball,” wrote a second fan. “What exactly was he going to do with third base down 1-0 in the eighth?” a third fan asked.

“That’s Aaron Boone baseball. Terrible fundamentals year after year with him as skipper,” a fourth fan claimed. “It’s a catcher trying to leg out a triple with two outs and down by one. Bonehead,” said a fifth reply. “That’s so bad it should count for two outs,” a sixth fan said.

There were many more reasons than just Wells’ decision that the Yankees lost the contest. Something like this will always stand out, though, and the team has a lot to figure out going into Game 2 of the series.
