Kentucky Football quarterback Kenny Minchey proved he is the real deal after leading the Wildcats to an improbable 35-34 overtime victory over South Carolina. Despite a slow start that saw him take sacks and struggle to complete passes, Minchey bounced back, stayed confident, and delivered when it mattered most.

Kentucky got off to a terrible start, falling behind 17-0 while recording just 18 total yards of offense in the first quarter. The Wildcats eventually found their rhythm but still trailed 20-10 at halftime. Minchey completed 6/12 passes for 50 yards and took two sacks in the first half.
However, the second half was a different story for the Wildcats and their quarterback. With help from the Big Blue Wall, which did a better job limiting pressure, Minchey found his rhythm and led Kentucky’s offense down the field.
On the Wildcats’ opening drive of the second half, Minchey delivered a 17-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Darby to get Kentucky back into the game. Later in the third quarter, after converting on fourth down, Minchey found Nic Anderson wide open in the end zone for a 32-yard touchdown, giving the Wildcats a 24-20 lead.
Kentucky had a chance to win in regulation but couldn’t turn its final drive into a field goal. The Wildcats headed into overtime, where Minchey continued to deliver with one precise throw after another.
After finding the end zone, Kentucky went for the 2-point conversion to win, and the Wildcats converted to score the thrilling 35-34 victory.
Minchey finished the game completing 28 of 41 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns. He also recorded eight carries for 12 yards, though three sacks limited his rushing.
The performance also put Minchey in the record books, as he became the first Kentucky Football quarterback to record at least 270 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a completion percentage of at least 68% in an SEC road game since program legend Jared Lorenzen accomplished the feat at Vanderbilt on Nov. 10, 2001, according to UK statistician Corey Price.
Minchey’s performance was even more impressive considering the adversity he faced early in the game. After struggling in the first half, he remained confident and delivered several key throws in the second half and overtime to help Kentucky complete the Columbia comeback.
It was an incredible comeback for Kentucky, which overcame a 17-point deficit and a difficult start to secure a statement victory on the road. The win improves the Wildcats to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in SEC play, while Minchey showed the resilience and poise needed to lead Kentucky through adversity.
At practice this spring I asked one of the coaches about Kenny Minchey. He did not talk about how far he could throw it. He did not talk about his skill as a runner. He talked about his leadership and his preparation. “He gets the play script the night before, and in the evening…
