Elly De La Cruz completes fourth 30-30 season in Reds history

Elly De La Cruz reached a major milestone in the Cincinnati Reds' final series of the season.

With a steal of third base in the third inning against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday, De La Cruz clinched the first 30-homer, 30-stolen base season of his career. It is also the fourth such season in Reds history.

The Reds went on to lose 6-5.

The only other 30-30 seasons in Reds history: Brandon Phillips in 2007, Barry Larkin in 1996 and Eric Davis in 1987. All three of those players are in the Reds' Hall of Fame.

One of them quickly welcomed De La Cruz to the club.

De La Cruz has come close to 30-30 before, posting 25 homers and 67 steals in his breakout 2024 season. This year has arguably been even better for De La Cruz, who has posted career-highs in all three slash line numbers at .285/.367/.522.

He reached 30 homers on Thursday against the Atlanta Braves, setting a new career high. Meanwhile, 30 stolen bases puts him on base for the fewest in his four seasons.

Since his days as a prospect, De La Cruz has loomed as an electric talent. Shortstops aren't supposed to be 6-foot-6. People that tall aren't supposed to be one of the fastest players in baseball. Players who swing as hard as De La Cruz with levers that long aren't supposed to have an above-average batting average.

In the past 30 days, he's posted a 1.232 OPS, by far the highest in MLB.

At 24 years old, De La Cruz appears to have taken another step. Unfortunately, he's doing it on a struggling Reds franchise that sits last place in the NL Central at 74-86.
