Through seven games in all competitions this season, the Bayern Munich winger has eight goals and four assists, giving him 11 goal contributions in total. According to @iMiaSanMia, he has also been named Man of the Match four times and is contributing a goal or assist every 51 minutes.
Those are absurd numbers, and they make it increasingly difficult to leave Olise out of the conversation when discussing the best players in the world.
Olise has never seemed particularly interested in being the center of attention away from the pitch. Even when he has a microphone in front of him, he tends to keep things fairly brief. But honestly, if he keeps producing like this, who cares? Bayern does not need Olise to deliver memorable interviews. The club needs him to deliver memorable performances, and that is exactly what he has been doing.
Eight goals and three assists in seven games is impressive enough on its own. Add four Man of the Match awards and a goal contribution every 51 minutes, and the picture becomes even clearer. Olise is not simply enjoying a good run of form; he is becoming one of the most important players in Bayern’s attack.
That is what makes his early-season numbers particularly significant. Bayern has no shortage of attacking talent, but Olise has the ability to change games with his creativity, finishing and knack for producing decisive moments. When he is playing at this level, he gives Bayern another player opposing defenses simply cannot afford to overlook.
And that brings us back to the Ballon d’Or. There is obviously a long way to go before the award is decided, and Olise will have plenty of competition. But the case for him does not need to be complicated: keep scoring, keep creating and keep deciding games. If Olise can maintain anything close to this level of production, he will have given himself a legitimate case to be considered among the world’s best players.
He might not give you the best interview afterward. He might not say much at all. But if Michael Olise keeps scoring or creating an assist every 51 minutes, Bayern Munich fans will happily let his football do the talking.
