Deshaun Watson faced significant backlash on his first drive of the 2026 season, throwing a costly interception after staring down wide receiver Jerry Jeudy. Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Foyesade Oluokun read the curl route perfectly, cutting underneath the coverage to steal the pass.

Oluokun returned the interception deep into Jacksonville territory. Eight plays later, Trevor Lawrence hit Parker Washington for a touchdown, putting the Browns in a 7-0 hole. It was Watson’s third pass attempt of the season, and his first live NFL snap since 2024. 

Though he won the starting job over second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders in training camp, the opener in Jacksonville reopened the quarterback debate sooner than expected.

The interception was followed by a fumble on a sack two possessions later, though Cleveland recovered the ball. However, by halftime, the Jaguars built a dominant 24-0 lead.


The three-time Pro Bowler has faced boos from home fans since the preseason, which he previously dismissed to reporters. Playing on the road saved him from hearing live boos, but the criticism flooded social media.

Shedeur Sanders fans react after Deshaun Watson’s ugly season opener

Shedeur Sanders supporters criticized Watson within minutes of his opening-drive interception, with many pushing for a quarterback change before Week 2.

One fan wrote, “I’ve already seen enough Deshaun Watson. Rip the band aid off and play Shedeur Sanders and if that doesn’t work just run wildcat with Taylen Green to secure a top 3 pick.”

Another added, “Now a sack fumble by Deshaun Watson. I don’t want to hear ‘rust’. An INT already, almost a second. No way he should see Game 2. Bring in Shedeur Sanders NOW.”

A third posted, “WATSON is 3-5 for 23yrds and has 1 interception and NOW a fumble already!!! BRING IN SHEDEUR NOW!!!”

The fourth viewer asked, “Deshaun Watson threw a int already. How long until Shedeur Sanders take over?” 

A fifth one remarked, “Shedeur Sanders watching Watson throw that pick.”

Watson missed the 2025 season after re-tearing his Achilles during rehab, which left fans doubting his return. Following the poor start, it remains to be seen whether coach Todd Monken will turn to Shedeur Sanders for the next game. Whatever decision he makes, it will dominate football conversations this week.
