Dabo Swinney is facing backlash over his response to a reporter who asked the Clemson football head coach a roster construction question following the team’s embarrassing 51-10 loss to Lane Kiffin’s LSU Tigers last Saturday at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge.

To some, the way Swinney handled the question can be seen as a sign that the program’s foundation is showing cracks under his watch. Some even think that it may be time for Clemson and Swinney to part ways, though that’s a lot more complicated than it sounds.

“I don’t really think Clemson can afford to bring [Dabo Swinney] back, and I don’t know if they can afford to fire him… They’re in a tough spot,” Sam Neumann of Awful Announcing said during a recent appearance on The Paul Finebaum Show.

Neumann also noted that it would be less expensive for Clemson to split with Swinney this year than in 2027, when the buyout costs will be significantly higher.

Having delivered two national championships to Clemson football (2016 and 2018), expectations are always going to be high on Swinney, but the Tigers have not been a serious contender for one in recent years.

Clemson has won nine games or fewer in two of the previous three seasons, and with how things looked in the Tigers’ first game of the 2026 college football campaign, Clemson seems to have rougher days ahead.

For the record, Swinney has gone just 7-8 in the last 15 games he’s coached. Regardless of how he carried himself responding to the reporter’s question, he will be under the microscope the rest of the way in 2026.

Up next for Clemson football is a matchup against the Georgia Southern Eagles at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, a light assignment that should help restore some confidence in the Tigers.
