The Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday signed former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Adrian Martinez to their practice squad after ruling out starter Sam Darnold with a quad injury for their Week 9 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. Head coach Mike Macdonald confirmed that Darnold would miss Sunday’s game, describing his status as week to week.

With Darnold unavailable, Drew Lock is expected to take over as the Seahawks’ starter, while rookie Jalen Milroe remains the next option. However, Lock has also been dealing with a right elbow injury that kept him inactive for the previous two games.
Martinez’s arrival gives Seattle another option to consider as they work through their injury concerns. The 26-year-old went undrafted in 2023 after spending four seasons at Nebraska and one at Kansas State. He started 47 games during his college career, completing 63.6% of his passes for 9,752 yards, 51 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. He also contributed 2,928 rushing yards and 45 touchdowns on the ground.

After beginning his professional career with the Detroit Lions, Martinez joined the Birmingham Stallions of the United Football League. He put together a standout 2024 season, finishing with a 6-1 record as a starter, throwing 15 passing touchdowns against three interceptions while adding more than 500 rushing yards and three scores.
Martinez’s performances earned him UFL MVP recognition, and he also received Championship Game MVP honors after helping Birmingham defeat the San Antonio Brahmas 25-0 in the 2024 title game. He threw a touchdown pass to ex-Seahawks draft pick Gary Jennings Jr. and contributed two rushing scores.
Martinez subsequently spent time with the New York Jets and 49ers. His only NFL appearance came with San Francisco last season, when he took a kneeldown to close out a win over the New York Giants.
Seattle also signed linebacker Jamie Sheriff to its practice squad on Wednesday. Sheriff previously spent time with the Seahawks before joining the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad in September. He appeared in three games across the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
The Seahawks released Linebacker Jimmy Ciarlo and wide receiver Malick Meiga to create room for the two additions.
