The Dukes were rolling right along, starting 7-0, and the remaining schedule seemed more than workable. Just as the College Football Playoff buzz started to get going … wham. App State 34-31, Troy 24-21, two straight losses, and thanks for playing. The Sun Belt title is still on the table, but there (likely) can’t be another loss.

It was a rough year for the Eagles, failing to win a game over an FBS team in a 1-5 start. And then … wham. 35-31 over Louisiana, 35-21 over ULM, and all of a sudden, USM is in a logjam in the Sun Belt West with a chance to play for the Sun Belt title if it wins out and several breaks fall its way.

Why James Madison Will Win
Deep breath, James Madison. It should all be okay.
Both losses were in overtime, and the problems in both games are fixable. The five turnovers against a blah Troy team were inexcusable. Five of Southern Miss’s ten takeaways came in the opener against Alcorn State.
The JMU running game was stuffed in the loss to App State. The Golden Eagle run defense has been okay lately, but it’s a problem overall, allowing close to five yards per carry.

Why did everything start to go so right over the last two weeks?
The Golden Eagles were on the right side of the turnover battle, going +2 in the two games, but more than that, the running game started to rumble.
Steven Robinson has gone off. The smallish, tough back ripped off 145 yards and three touchdowns against Louisiana, and 151 yards and a touchdown against ULM. Get the rushing attack working, and the fun will continue, but …

Southern Miss goes fast, fast, fast, and it doesn’t really worry about the time of possession battle. That led to over 530 rushing yards and seven scores over the last two wins.
James Madison also doesn’t really care much about controlling the clock, but it has yet to give up 200 yards on the ground this season, and has all but stuffed most teams, allowing just 3.3 yards per carry.
The Dukes right the ship with a solid, workmanlike win with Seth Cromwell coming up with his second 100-yard rushing day in place of an injured George Pettaway to get the win.
