Star wide receiver Malachi Toney suffered a high ankle sprain in practice on Wednesday, and according to reports has undergone surgery for the injury. Toney is expected to return later in the season, but will miss this weekend’s game against Notre Dame.
Toney has put up impressive numbers for the Hurricanes this season, helping propel Miami to the top spot in the College Football Playoff rankings and putting himself right in the Heisman Trophy conversation. Through eight games, Toney has pulled in 73 passes for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns, after catching a school-record 109 passes a season ago as Miami reached the National Championship Game.
With Toney out, quarterback Darian Mensah will look to other targets in the passing game, including WR Cooper Barkate, who is second on the team with 28 receptions for 372 yards and four touchdowns, and WR Daylyn Upshaw, who has caught 22 passes for 263 yards and a pair of scores.
