The Green Bay Packers lost 20–17 to the Detroit Lions in a game that featured several controversial officiating decisions. Television rules analyst Dean Blandino questioned whether the contact warranted a penalty. The decision allowed Detroit’s drive to continue and became one of the calls discussed after the game.
Another controversial incident involved defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt. He received an unnecessary roughness penalty after tackling Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. Referee Alex Moore later explained that, in his judgment, Wyatt had made excessive contact after the play had ended. Detroit scored a touchdown two plays after the penalty, adding to the attention surrounding the decision.
The Packers also faced offensive struggles early in the game. Quarterback Jordan Love was penalized for intentional grounding on a pass intended for tight end Tucker Kraft. Referee Alex Moore explained the decision, saying the pass did not reach the line of scrimmage.
LaFleur addressed the disputed calls without focusing on individual officials. Instead, he acknowledged the difficulty of making decisions during a fast-moving game and focused on the need for consistency across the league. He noted that officials often have to make judgments within seconds, leaving little time to assess every detail of a play.
“I don’t think officiating in this league is very easy. I really don’t. I think things happen quickly, and there’s some bang-bang decisions they have to make. So I don’t think they have an easy job. All you want as a coach is consistency,” LaFleur said.
LaFleur said coaches want similar situations to be judged the same way across games, even though officials often have only seconds to make decisions. He focused on officiating standards across the league rather than any single play.
The Packers were penalized eight times for a total of 81 yards during the game. The roughing-the-passer and intentional-grounding penalties came during a game decided by three points. Both penalties occurred during pivotal sequences.
The Packers also missed opportunities on offense and special teams. Kicker Trey Smack missed two field-goal attempts, including a 35-yard kick in the fourth quarter. The missed kicks also contributed to the Packers’ defeat.
Following the loss, the Packers fell to 4–3. LaFleur reiterated that coaches want similar plays officiated the same way across the league while acknowledging the challenges officials face during NFL games.
