After sitting out as an outside spectator for the first week of league action and a loss to kick off their conference slate in Week 6, the Green Wave changed their potential for the season with that victory.
They not only knocked the Tigers out of a tie for the top spot, but they also shot up considerably in the American Conference standings.
It also sets up an even more pivotal matchup for Tulane this upcoming weekend. The thought initially ahead of this major three game slate was that if the Green Wave could come out of the start of conference play at 2-1, that they have a real chance at the conference championship game for a fifth year in a row.
The Army Black Knights knocked off the FAU Owls with their first loss in conference play with a 56-24 victory.
Tulane is now 1-1 in league play with a chance to shoot up the standings this weekend hosting the UTSA Roadrunners who now lead the American.
The Roadrunners (6-1, 3-0) stand alone at the top now, followed by the North Texas Mean Green (4-2, 2-0) as the remaining undefeated teams in the league.
Next up are the Black Knights (4-2, 3-1), then the Memphis Tigers (5-2, 2-1), and the UAB Blazers (4-3, 2-1) as the teams who have a winning record in conference play.
The FAU Owls (4-2, 1-1), East Carolina Pirates (3-3, 1-1), and now the Green Wave (3-3, 1-1) are all even in their league slate ahead of Week 7.
Next up are those in the American with losing records, which no longer includes Tulane.
The South Florida Bulls (5-2, 1-2), Tulsa Golden Hurricanes (4-3, 1-2), Temple Owls (2-5, 1-2) Charlotte 49ers (1-6, 1-2), and Navy Midshipmen (2-4, 1-3) all have at least one win in conference play.
The only team in the American without a win in league play are the Rice Owls (1-6, 0-3).
The Blazers beat the Pirates in a wild 13-point overtime 30-17 win, Tulane topped Memphis 31-17, Army handled FAU 56-24, Charlotte got their first win of the year in a 38-31 win over Temple, Tulsa topped Rice 38-17, and UTSA handled Navy 38-34 in the conference wins for the week.
The next game up is always the most important one for the Wave, but their Week 8 opponent really matters in the Roadrunners.
