This weekend, the 5-0 Minnesota Vikings got to sit back and relax atop the NFC North while most of the NFL went back to work for Week 6. And now, they await the Indianapolis Colts, who come to town off a horrendous loss to the 0-5 Tennessee Titans.

If that wasn’t bad enough, news broke Monday that the 2-4 Colts will likely be without their top cornerback against Kyler Murray and the blossoming Vikings offense on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Sauce Gardner doubtful against Minnesota Vikings

Sauce Gardner left Sunday’s game against Tennessee with a calf injury. Ian Rapoport (ESPN) notes below that his status is currently week-to-week. From the sounds of it, though, the former No. 4 overall draft pick is highly unlikely to suit up in Minnesota six days from now.

More #Colts news: Pro Bowl CB Sauce Garder, who was unable to finish Sunday’s loss to the #Titans, has a mild calf strain that makes him week-to-week, sources say after the MRI. Gardner is expected to miss some time, but not an extended period. https://t.co/Kli7wJRgwI

Gardner, who just turned 25 this summer, is in his second season with the Colts. Across six games, he has four passes defended and 17 tackles. He hasn’t intercepted a pass since 2024 and injuries have begun to pile up lately.

There was a time Sauce Gardner was among the best cornerbacks in the NFL. That isn’t the case this season (60.9 grade per PFF – 52nd of 102 CBs) but his talent is still undeniable.

Vikings facing beat-up Colts secondary… but that’s only the start

Depth cornerback Cameron Mitchell is already on injured reserve, which means the Colts will likely look to Cam Taylor-Britt for reps.

Their secondary also includes former MN Vikings safety Cam Bynum and MN Gophers product Justin Walley. Don’t forget about former Vikings QB Daniel Jones returning to U.S. Bank Stadium too…

Meanwhile, Kyler Murray is coming off his best game as a Viking, where he completed 24 of 30 passes for 229 yards and a touchdown Week 5 against the Saints. But really, the Colts have way bigger problems than what’s happening on the injury report or even the outcome of their next game.

On Monday morning, owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon fired general manager Chris Ballard, saying the Colts’ standard is to compete for championships and a change in leadership was needed to get there.

With Ballard out, more sweeping changes could be coming soon. So far Shane Steichen remains employed as the head coach, but after a 9-win first season, he has gone 8-9 twice and could be on the hot seat.

If Indianapolis is going to make further changes following a loss to the Minnesota Vikings, you can bet teams will be calling interim GM Ed Dodds about running back Jonathan Taylor. The timing that these two organizations are meeting is especially intriguing, given the opposite direction they’re traveling.
