Michigan coach keeps starting quarterback plan quiet

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan football may have started a new era on Saturday, but it also may not have.

In the second half against Penn State, quarterback Tommy Carr came in for struggling signal caller Bryce Underwood, and with his insertion, the Wolverines were off to the races. Thus, it would stand to reason that having Carr start against Indiana this upcoming Saturday will be the move that head coach Kyle Whittingham will make.
However, he’s being awfully mum about who will actually be under center.
“Well, we saw good stuff out of what Tommy did in that second half,” Whittingham said. “And we know exactly what we're doing with the plan going forward. We're not gonna tip our hand to the opponent. But we have a good plan in place. And that's about all I can say on that.”
Whittingham says he does know who he intends to start against the Hoosiers, and that he formulated the plan on Sunday night. And he admits that he could always go back to Underwood, whether it’s this week or down the road.
However, he does not plan to platoon them and give each time.
As far as what Carr brings to the table, fans caught their first glimpse at the spring game in April, but it became apparent to Whittingham even sooner, what his capabilities were. It didn’t even take him strapping on a helmet to make an early impression.
“Well, it started from really the first chance I had to observe him in the workouts,” Whittingham said. “He's a leader in that respect. He's working his tail off. He's interacting with his teammates. He's got a good rapport with his teammates. And when the spring ball came around, really from day one, he was playing very efficiently and just got better all through spring. And that carried through the summer, through fall camp. And when he had his opportunity to have his first extensive live work, he made the most of it.”
If Carr is the starter, as anticipated, Whittingham says nothing will be watered down. He will have the full playbook at his disposal.
”(There’s) not a quarterback that I've ever been around that studies any more than Tommy Carr. And his football IQ is off the charts. He's got a football mind. He's a football junkie.”
Michigan and Indiana are set to kick off at The Big House on Saturday at 12:10 p.m. EDT, with the game set to broadcast on Fox.
