The New York Giants have wasted little time reshuffling their quarterback depth chart. JJ McCarthy has officially been listed as QB2 behind Jameis Winston ahead of New York’s Week 5 divisional showdown against the Washington Commanders. That marks another significant development in the former first-round pick’s fresh start. With Jake Haener remaining on the practice squad, McCarthy has secured the primary backup role after impressing the coaching staff with his command of the offense and progress during practice.
Head coach John Harbaugh hinted Monday that the move was coming.
“I think that’s a possibility. We’ll see how it goes during the week, but that’s definitely on the table,” Harbaugh said when asked about McCarthy overtaking Haener.

The decision comes shortly after McCarthy arrived following Jaxson Dart’s season-ending knee injury. Veteran Jameis Winston remains New York’s unquestioned starter after directing a 36-point offensive performance in Week 4. McCarthy, though, is now one play away from taking meaningful snaps. His rapid promotion suggests the Giants are increasingly comfortable with his development.
McCarthy’s NFL journey has already featured considerable adversity. Selected 10th overall by Minnesota in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Michigan product missed his entire first season after suffering a torn meniscus that required surgery. He returned in 2025, starting 10 games while throwing 11 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. Minnesota subsequently moved in another direction. They traded McCarthy to New York for a 2027 fifth-round pick. The 23-year-old now finds himself working under John Harbaugh, whose brother Jim coached McCarthy to a national championship at Michigan. With a new opportunity and growing confidence from his coaches, McCarthy has taken an important step toward rebuilding his NFL career.
