Lothar Matthäus doubts Musiala and Wirtz can play together for Germany

Two of Germany’s biggest stars didn’t get the chance to play together during the international break, as Jürgen Klopp named Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz in different squads for the four UEFA Nations League games.

Musiala later picked up an injury before even getting involved, with Wirtz brought in earlier as his replacement.

With Klopp having made it clear that he intends to call up just one squad next month, the two could finally get the chance to line up together for Germany under the 59-year-old coach.

However, Germany legend Lothar Matthäus is struggling to see how Klopp can find room for both players, who generally prefer to operate in a central attacking role.

“If it were up to me, I’d be happy to see Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz play together. Klopp confirmed in the game against Greece that Wirtz can, in principle, also play on the left wing under him. But with Kimmich as the only holding midfielder, the Musiala-Wirtz duo would be too attacking against top opposition," Matthäus told Sport Bild.

"That leaves Klopp with a choice in his system: Musiala OR Wirtz! The Bayern and Liverpool players are probably our best players when they return to top form. Leaving one of them out therefore sounds absurd.”

Matthäus reiterated that he would be happy if Klopp could find a solution that would allow both Musiala and Wirtz to start.

“However, based on the first four international matches, I don’t believe – assuming Klopp sticks to his system – that we will see that solution at the 2028 European Championship," he said.
