The Patriots have plenty of injury concerns heading into Buffalo, but Dre’Mont Jones offered an encouraging update Thursday.

The veteran linebacker returned to practice this week after missing New England’s loss to Jacksonville with a shoulder injury. More encouraging than his presence on the field was his explanation of what happened after the initial pain subsided. Jones told reporters he initially feared a more serious problem. Further evaluation gave him a more reassuring picture, and he credited the Patriots’ training staff for helping him progress while remaining cautious.

“Feeling better and better every single day,” Jones said, according to Boston.com.

That does not settle his availability against the Bills. It does give New England a positive development during a week when several important defenders have been unable to practice.

Initial Scare Gives Way To Progress

Jones injured his shoulder while trying to recover a fumble during the Patriots’ Week 2 victory over Pittsburgh. He missed practice the following week before sitting out the 35-6 loss to the Jaguars.

His return has come in stages. New England listed him as a limited participant Wednesday and Thursday, leaving his game status unresolved. Asked whether he would play Sunday, Jones responded, “We’ll see what they say.” The distinction matters: feeling better and returning to practice are encouraging steps, but neither amounts to clearance for a game.

For now, the Patriots can evaluate how his shoulder responds to football work before making that decision.

Buffalo Makes Every Defensive Reinforcement Matter

Jones’ possible return would come at a useful time. Christian Barmore and Christian Gonzalez both missed Thursday’s practice with shoulder injuries, creating uncertainty at multiple levels of New England’s defense.

That makes Jones worth watching beyond his individual recovery. If he is available, the Patriots would regain another experienced option as they prepare for Josh Allen and Buffalo.

The defensive challenge involves more than reaching the quarterback. New England needs disciplined pursuit, sound tackling and enough depth to withstand extended possessions.

A healthier Jones could help with that workload. The next question is whether his encouraging progress carries through the rest of the practice week and onto the active roster Sunday.
