To be fair, though, Brady built a career that repeatedly challenged expectations for how long an NFL quarterback could play. His competitive drive has kept those rumors alive even years after his retirement (and he’s already made one surprise NFL comeback).
Now, longtime biographer Lars Anderson has offered a new prediction that has fans revisiting the possibility of Brady returning to the NFL at 50 years old.
Tom Brady Comeback Talk Draws Skepticism From NFL Community
Anderson, who has spent years researching Brady’s career, recently discussed the possibility of the QB returning to the NFL during an appearance on “Front Office Sports Tonight.”
After conducting more than 350 interviews for his book, “Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness,” Anderson suggested Brady could still have the desire to play, while acknowledging that his prediction was purely speculative.
“I do think that if Tom had his druthers, he would be playing right now, and I would not be shocked if he somehow tries to play next year,” Anderson said.
Brady, who will turn 50 in August 2027, revealed in a CNBC interview in March 2026 that he had asked the NFL whether he could return to the field while retaining his ownership stake in the Raiders.
League officials made it clear that he could not be both an active player and an owner under current rules. The fact that he even asked is telling.

Anderson’s prediction prompted mixed reactions from NFL fans and analysts on X.
Sports media analyst Ryan Glasspiegel responded with a dose of skepticism, writing, “Tom Brady’s biographer Lars Anderson told Bridget Condon he wouldn’t be shocked Brady tried to come back to the NFL next year… (Hand up, I’d be shocked).”
NFL betting analyst Bill Speros wrote, “’Brady competes with Drake Maye for Patriots starting QB job’ is my dream headline.”
However, if Brady does try to return to the NFL, he would run into some major hurdles since he’s a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders and currently on a 10-year, $375 million deal with Fox.

NFL reporter Mark Maske pointed out that complication, writing, “NFL owners voted in 2023 to enact a rule prohibiting a non-family team employee from holding equity in a franchise. So under current rules, Tom Brady can be a Raiders part-owner, or he can be an active player. But he can’t be both.”
One NFL fan also focused on the financial complications, writing, “Won’t happen. He’d have to pay capital gains on the stake. Plus the legal/banking fees associated with the sale. A blind trust wouldn’t be enough. Then more legal/banking fees to re-buy the stake when he’s done playing.”
Brady retired after a 23-season career with seven Super Bowl titles, six with the New England Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
At this stage, Brady has emerged as one of the better sports broadcasters and his Raiders are currently 3-0, so he has found success away from the field. It would be a surprise if he ultimately decided to walk away from those ventures in order to make a surprise NFL comeback at 50 years old, but crazier things have happened.
