The Daily: Larkin Back at Practice; Red Wings Nearing Opening Night Roster

It’s a big day for Detroit, as professional hockey is finally returning to Little Caesars Arena after a several months-long hiatus. The Mickey Mouse operation of yesterday has been cleared out, and the main rink should be prepped and ready for a full compliment of hockey players when the puck drops tonight at 7:00 P.M.
The Red Wings have also seen the return of former captain Dylan Larkin to the ice as of yesterday, though it reports indicate that he will not be ready for tonight’s preseason. Still, adding Larkin back to the lineup, and more importantly the power play, should inject some more juice into the lineup.

Though the Red Wings scored seven goals in their preseason matchup with Pittsburgh, that kind of offensive output is more of an anomaly than the standard based on the Red Wings track record over the last couple of years.
However, even as players like Larkin are coming back into the fold, roster cutdowns must continue. The Red Wings waived offseason acquisition Wilmer Skoog as well as veteran defenseman William Lagesson with the intent for the two to join their AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins. Skoog had a goal and an assist in the Red Wings matchup with the Penguins, but had had a quiet training camp otherwise.
Tonight’s preseason game will likely see the first action for the Red Wings de-facto top line of Andrew Copp, Lucas Raymond, and Alex DeBrincat as the Red Wings look to take on a highly talented Buffalo Sabres squad, though they will be without offseason trade acquisiton Owen Zellweger, who was injured the other night.

The Red Wings took their first big hit of the preseason, as 2025 first round pick Carter Bear sustained an injury during their preseason game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Bear was a long shot to make the Red Wings roster, but should be a top six contributor for the Grand Rapids Griffins this year in the AHL.
“Bear has an upper body injury, which is probably day-to-day ora week, is what we think. Obviously Larkin is still hurt, said McLellan, “[Chase] Stillman, who came into training camp with an off-season injury, still
hasn’t been cleared.”
Both Larkin and Stillman have returned to practice, however, neither has taken part in heavy contact drills.
