WHY THE “13 WORKING DAYS” FIGURE DOESN’T TELL THE WHOLE STORY
Home Affairs’ target processing times, as of 2026, break down as follows.
A standard tourist passport takes 13 working days at a Smart-ID-enabled office, either a modernised DHA branch or a partner bank.
That stretches to 24 working days at a non-Smart-ID office or a foreign mission.
If you’re genuinely out of time, an emergency travel certificatetakes around 5 working days.
Here’s the part that catches people out.
December and Easter holiday peaks routinely slow throughput by an additional 5 to 10 working days, on top of any existing backlogs.
Public-sector strikes can add further delays on top of that.
HOW MUCH LONGER IT TAKES IF YOU’RE APPLYING FROM ABROAD
If you’re a South African living overseas, the timeline shifts considerably.
Missions using manual, paper-based applications can take 6 to 8 weeks or longer.
Missions with Live Capture equipment, which transmit biometric data electronically, typically process applications in around 5 weeks.
There’s genuinely good news for expats in specific hubs, though.
Since November 2025, South Africa has rolled out doorstep passport delivery in major expat cities, including:
- London
- Dubai
- Perth
- Auckland
- New York
- Ottawa
- Berlin
- The Hague
Once your passport is ready at the embassy, delivery now takes just 24 to 72 hours, a significant improvement on the up to 18 months many expats previously waited for a new passport.
WHAT ELSE TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BOOK ANYTHING
Processing time is only half the picture.
Most countries refuse entry, or even boarding at the departure airport, if your passport will expire within six months of your arrival date.
It’s worth checking your specific destination’s exact requirement, since some countries only require three months of validity instead.
Fees are worth knowing too.
A standard 32-page tourist passport costs R600 for both adults and children under 16.
The 48-page maxi passport costs R1,200.
If your passport is lost or stolen, replacement costs R1,200, a deliberately doubled penalty rate meant to discourage repeat losses.
