Natural Selection Surf comp lands on SA’s raw West Coast

Natural Selection Surf is a contest like no other. Forget a tidy wave pool or predictable two-foot beach break. This competition is all about stripping competition back to its rawest form, in the most testing conditions mother nature is capable of.

Founded by pro snowboarder, Travis Rice, Natural Selection Surf allows the environment to set the terms. And for 2026, that unique philosophy landed them on South Africa’s wild and rugged West Coast.
Camped at an off-the-grid location for 10 days, they chased whatever the winter Atlantic served up …
NATURAL SELECTION SURF
As such, 12 surfers – eight men and four women – were joined by a 30-strong South African crew to tackle this unique adventure.
In the preview video released by Natural Selection Surf, The Build (see below), every visiting surfer walked into this one blind.
Hawaiian Noah Beschen had never worn a 4:3 wetsuit – standard-issue equipment for anyone surfing in the Atlantic Ocean.
South Africa’s Eli Beukes is the event’s local invite and actually hails from Lambert’s Bay on the West Coast. He’s up against reigning champs from season one, Milla ‘Coco’ Brown and Soli Bailey. Five returning 2025 finalists include Kirra Pinkerton, Noah Beschen and Eithan Osborne. And Natural Selection Surf debutants include Eden Walla, Sanoa Dempfle-Olin, Mikey Wright, Balaram Stack, Jarvis Earle and Hughie Vaughan.
HOW THE COMP WORKS
Just setting up the location was an achievement. Video: Natural Selection Surf on YouTubeNatural Selection Surf throws out the standard wave-scoring system entirely.
Instead of tallying individual wave scores, judges Nathan Fletcher, Greg Emslie and Sean Holmes rank surfers first to fourth in each session based on overall performance across: Creativity, Risk, Execution, Difficulty and Overall Impression.
Points carry forward across the week: 12 for first, 7 for second, 3 for third, 1 for fourth, building a cumulative leaderboard. After four sessions, the top four men and top four women advance to a head-to-head final, the crown going to whoever proves the most complete surfer across the whole ten-day period.

Organisers have kept the footage locked down since the mission wrapped on SA’s West Coast a few months ago.
Ultimately, it’s yet more proof that South Africa’s coastline, like its people, are just built different. May the best man and woman win …
