A nearby elderly couple pauses their soup-sipping.

Great.

Ammamma pats my hand. “Breathe. The only person thinking about your uterus right now is you. Probably.”

Mom, fuelled by lychee mocktail number two, leans in. “Okay. My first period story. Buckle up.”

Mom (Tara); Age: 13.5

“I was at a math Olympiad. Wearing white trousers. I stood up to solve a quadratic equation on the board … and bam. Crimson catastrophe. The first day of my first period was painless. It was only when I stood up and fainted – I still don’t know why – that everyone realised that I had got my period. Incidentally, the entire hall knew when I got my period BEFORE I did.”

I gasp. “No.”

“Yes. I never finished the Olympiad, and Amma was called to pick me up from school. On our way back she bought me a pomegranate! A pomegranate of all things, to celebrate my period,” guffaws Mom.

Ammamma laughs aloud and blushes. “We didn’t have money for anything fancy. And,” she looks at Mom fondly, “pomegranates were expensive. It really was a treat to buy one those days!”

Mom is smiling and nodding. I’m starting to actually like this. Hmmm.
