However, WNBA legend Tina Thompson believes that Angel Reese deserves a shout in the MVP race for her defensive work and record-breaking rebounding at both ends of the floor.
On the Cousins podcast, she said: “I also think that Angel needs to be in that conversation. Like she went there and that Atlanta team is revived. They’re different. I think what they’re like maybe number four, you know, right now like in the league. They’re like in that top five. And it just looks different.
“But what she brings is impactful. Like what Angel Reese does, it impacts winning, and it doesn’t necessarily mean like scoring. She rebounds like crazy, most double doubles in a season, like people that didn’t play, they don’t know how hard that is. It’s hard. She gets after on them boards.
“So, I like Angel. I like how she’s unapologetically herself. But I like that she’s taken a different route to impact the game, that she’s not so fixated on scoring. She’s like dirty work. I’ll get it done. Like heck, I wouldn’t mind being her teammate. It’ll allow me to be a little bit more finesse.”
While Angel Reese puts up solid production at 16.1 points per game, her offensive efficiency continues to stall her MVP momentum. Blowing high-percentage looks around the rim, including a missed point-blank layup that sparked a viral eye-roll reaction from Caitlin Clark, highlights the finishing struggles.
