Beaverton cancels football game due to injuries, safety concerns

A mid-Michigan high school football team is canceling its varsity game scheduled for Friday, Sept. 18, after school officials say there aren't enough student athletes to compete.
Beaverton, which opened the 2026 season with a 2-1 record, announced the cancelation of its home game against Harrison on Tuesday due to a high number of student-athlete injuries and safety concerns.

School administrators say the junior varsity team will compete at 6 p.m. Thursday, but the quick turnaround won't allow them to properly rest and recover for the game the next day.
"The safety, health, and long-term well-being of our student-athletes will always be our absolute top priority," said the Beaverton Athletic Department said in a news release on Facebook.
"While we are incredibly disappointed for our varsity players, coaches, and fans, this difficult step is necessary to allow our team time to heal. We are grateful that our JV student-athletes still have the opportunity to compete this week, and we extend our sincere appreciation to Harrison High School, the Jack Pine Conference, and the Beaverton community for their understanding and continued support."
The athletic department is encouraging fans to travel and support the junior varsity squad.
Beaverton, a class C district, has about 223 students in the high school, according to the MHSAA.
