Mike McCarthy establishing new standards for Steelers after Week 1 win

The Steelers are turning the page following Sunday’s Week 1 win over the Falcons.

But a lot of the questions head coach Mike McCarthy answered on Monday had to do with Joey Porter Jr.’s status. The cornerback, who is still in search of a contract, was inactive on Sunday.
McCarthy said it was his decision to hold Porter out of the game. He was non-committal about whether Porter Jr. will be able to play this week, health-wise.
The team hopes to have a good plan for him when they begin on-field work Wednesday, ideally having him increase his volume of work as the week goes on.
And while the Steelers came out with a 20-13 win on Sunday, McCarthy feels they have a tremendous amount of work to do.
Channel 11’s Jenna Harner asked McCarthy about his process of going back after a game and analyzing what didn’t work well. He shared insight about how he immediately spends time looking at the analytics, then presents it to the players and coaches.
“There are guidelines, there are goals, you know, there are thresholds, there’s time blocks and everything that I’ve just used for so long,” he said. “So I think it’s a really good meter to create a standard of play, which you feel you need to play above to win in this league. So frankly that’s what was established today.”
Outside of Joey Porter Jr., the Steelers are going into the week healthy. McCarthy said he still had to have conversations with the training staff, but he did not have any notable injuries to mention that occurred during the game.
