The San Francisco Giants are considering ending Logan Webb’s 2026 season early after another difficult start, with manager Tony Vitello confirming on Sunday that shutting down the right-hander is now under discussion. Vitello said he and Webb will talk about it before a final decision is made.
Webb surrendered six earned runs on eight hits across five innings against the San Diego Padres, dropping his record to 8-8. The outing pushed his season ERA to 4.31, the worst mark of his career in a full season. He has also recorded a 9.86 ERA across his last five starts, continuing a recent stretch of inconsistent performances.
The 29-year-old has alternated between impressive and poor outings since the All-Star break. He gave up five earned runs in 2 2/3 innings against the Boston Red Sox on August 21 before limiting the Cincinnati Reds to two runs over six innings five days later. After allowing another five runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 1, Webb responded by holding the St. Louis Cardinals to one run over six innings on September 7. His latest performance against San Diego marked another downturn.

Fatigue could be a factor. Webb has worked 160 2/3 innings this season after participating in the World Baseball Classic, which caused his campaign to begin earlier. He also missed three weeks in May because of right knee bursitis. That was his first injured-list stint since 2021, following four consecutive seasons without an IL appearance from 2022 through 2025.
Webb has been one of baseball’s most durable starters, making 185 starts from 2021 through Sunday, third among qualified pitchers behind Dylan Cease’s 190 and Kevin Gausman’s 188. His career high is 216 innings, set in 2023.
The Giants are 62-88 and have been mathematically eliminated from postseason contention, leaving the team with little incentive to push Webb through the remainder of the season.
