The decision comes one day after Cleveland suffered a 34-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in its season opener. Watson completed 16 of 22 passes for 205 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Watson also took five sacks as the Browns struggled to sustain drives. Cleveland managed just 272 total yards and turned the ball over twice in the loss.
Despite the poor result, Monken believes there were positives to take from Watson’s performance. He said there were “some really good things on film” when discussing the quarterback’s play.
The decision keeps Shedeur Sanders on the bench for at least another week. The rookie quarterback had been one of the biggest storylines surrounding Cleveland’s quarterback competition throughout the offseason.
For now, Monken is sticking with Watson as the Browns prepare for their first road game of the season. Cleveland will travel to Tampa Bay looking to avoid an 0-2 start.
Watson’s performance will remain under close attention after his difficult return to regular-season action. He had not played in a regular-season game since 2024 before Sunday’s loss.
The Browns also need to improve around their quarterback. Jacksonville recorded five sacks, while Cleveland committed 11 penalties for 75 yards.
Sanders will now continue waiting for his opportunity. Unless the Browns make another change during the week, Watson will get the chance to respond against Tampa Bay.
The Browns and Buccaneers will meet Sunday at Raymond James Stadium as Cleveland looks to bounce back from its disappointing opening-week performance.
