NBA veteran Taj Gibson to retire after 17 seasons, join Bulls staff

Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Taj Gibson will retire from the NBA after 17 seasons and join the Chicago Bulls coaching staff, he announced Monday.
Gibson, 41, appeared in 10 games last season for the Memphis Grizzlies.

The No. 26 overall pick by the Bulls in the 2009 NBA Draft also spent time with the Charlotte Hornets, Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, Washington Wizards, Minnesota Timberwolves and Oklahoma City Thunder.
"Today is a very emotional day for me," Gibson wrote on X and Instagram. "After 17 seasons in the NBA, I can honestly say I gave this game everything I had."
Gibson called his decision "the beginning of a new chapter." Later Monday, the Bulls announced head coach Thiago Splitter's finalized 15-man coaching staff, which features Gibson as an assistant, along with Wes Unseld Jr., Blake Ahearn, Jamelle McMillan, Rex Kalamian and Jonah Herscu, among others.
Gibson, a former USC star, averaged a career-high 13 points, with 6.8 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and 1.1 assists per game for the Bulls in 2013-14. He logged 8.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.0 blocks and 0.9 assists per game over 1,012 career appearances.

"Basketball gave me the opportunity to live a dream," Gibson wrote. "As a kid from Brooklyn, N.Y., I was lucky to get a chance to display my talent on the biggest stage," Gibson wrote. "From Fort Greene Projects to USC, to the Chicago Bulls, and every team and city that came after, I'm grateful for every moment, every teammate, every coach, and every person who believed in me.
"I wanted to be the guy my teammates could count on someone who brought toughness, energy, leadership, and heart every time I stepped on the court."
