A Shocker In Poland! Josh Saunders Upsets +99kg No. 1 Seed Felipe Pena In Overtime

The No. 1 seed in the +99kg division is out of the 2026 ADCC World Championship. 

Felipe Pena, the 2024 Worlds Gold Medalist, has lost to No. 5 seed Josh Saunders in the division semifinals.

Saunders wins the 0-0 decision in a scoreless overtime, and will advance to face No. 7 seed Victor Hugo, who upset Mark Macqueen earlier in the day.

Josh Saunders Advances In Overtime

Felipe Pena and Josh Saunders remained scoreless through the end of regulation. Saunders opened with top heavy pressure, and was able to secure the decision after a scoreless overtime.

It's arguably the most notable upset of Day 2 in Krakow, Poland. Pena is a two-time Gold Medalist and Silver Medalist at the ADCC World Championships.

With the No. 1 seed and favorite in the +99kg division falling, Kaynan Duarte is now the only No. 1 seed remaining in the men's divisions.

The Final Is Now Set At +99kg

With Josh Saunders defeating Felipe Pena and Victor Hugo submitting Mark Macqueen with a knee bar, the final is now set between the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds in the division.

Both submission grapplers are looking for their first-ever gold medal at the ADCC World Championships.
