NEW YORK — The flags atop Yankee Stadium, usually reserved for showcasing Major League Baseball's standings by the order of the teams, were replaced with 35 American flags at half mast.
With a little more than two weeks until the end of the regular season, the significance of the meeting of the Mets and Yankees went well beyond the playoff picture.

The two New York baseball teams were set to face off on the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks at 7:05 p.m. on Friday.
A quarter-century ago, the two sides played a major role in helping to deliver some semblance of healing amid the unfathomable tragedy that struck New York City.
Mike Piazza delivered a rousing go-ahead home run in the eighth inning of the first regular season game of any sport played in New York City 10 days after the attacks. Later on in the fall, the Yankees went on a run to the World Series where they ultimately lost to the Diamondbacks despite some magical moments from Derek Jeter and Alfonso Soriano.
Friday will serve as a reminder of the healing qualities and escape that baseball can deliver in trying times.

Andy Green reflects on power of baseball in wake of 9/11
Andy Green woke up on Sept. 11, 2001, expecting to play a championship series for the South Bend Silver Hawks in the Midwest League before the events of that day made that game feel “radically insignificant.”
The Mets interim manager, who was then 24 years old, spent the day glued to the TV and checking in with loved ones. Twenty-five years later, Green will toe the line as the manager of the Mets against the rival Yankees.
“I think obviously it takes us back 25 years and all the emotions we felt, the uncertainty we let that day, the pain we felt for people who lost loves ones,” Green said. “It’s going to be incredibly special. I think Major League Baseball got this one right putting these two teams together on this day.”
Green expects to be plenty emotional on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11, and he hopes his players can absorb the gravity of the moment.
“There’s some things that are much bigger than just the game we have the privilege and playing and being a part of,” Green said.
