The 2026 MLB postseason bracket is beginning to take shape, but several of the most important races remain far from settled. If the season ended today, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox would meet in a best-of-three American League Wild Card Series. The National League bracket would include an equally intriguing matchup between the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs.
Those potential series could disappear quickly.
Only two games separate the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central. The Houston Astros hold the same margin over the Texas Rangers in the AL West, while the Arizona Diamondbacks sit only a half-game behind the San Diego Padres for the final NL wild-card berth.
The Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers occupy the strongest positions entering the final weeks.
Here is the complete MLB playoff picture through games played Wednesday, Sept. 9, according to the official MLB standings.
American League playoff picture
The Rays own the American League’s best record at 87-58 and hold a four-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East.
Tampa Bay would receive the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the AL playoffs if the standings remain unchanged. The White Sox, despite having a worse record than both the Yankees and Red Sox, would receive the No. 2 seed as the league’s second-best division winner. That distinction is critical. The top two division champions receive first-round byes, while the third division winner must participate in the Wild Card Series.
Houston currently holds the third seed as the AL West leader. The Astros have a two-game advantage over Texas, but their 74-72 record leaves them vulnerable in both the division and wild-card races. The Yankees are comfortably positioned as the top wild-card team at 83-62. Their plus-124 run differential is the best in the American League, and they hold a three-game advantage over the Red Sox for the first wild-card spot.
Boston is 80-67 and occupies the second wild-card position. The Red Sox have lost two straight, but they remain six games ahead of the playoff cutoff.
Cleveland owns the final spot at 74-73. Toronto is one game behind, Texas trails by 1.5 games and Baltimore is three games back. The Blue Jays and Orioles begin a significant series Friday in Toronto, while Cleveland opens a road series against Minnesota. Texas has an opportunity to gain ground Thursday against Seattle.

National League playoff picture
The Brewers own baseball’s best record at 91-56, but the Dodgers are applying pressure for the National League’s top seed. Los Angeles improved to 89-57 by completing a three-game sweep of Cincinnati on Wednesday. The Dodgers have won seven consecutive games and trail Milwaukee by 1.5 games in the race for home-field advantage.
Both teams have established commanding division leads and are positioned to receive first-round byes.
The Braves hold the No. 3 seed as the NL East leader, but their advantage over the Phillies is down to three games. Atlanta has lost three consecutive games, while Philadelphia defeated Houston 11-7 on Wednesday behind Kyle Schwarber’s major-league-leading 44th home run. Philadelphia leads the wild-card standings at 82-64. The Cubs are 81-66 and hold the second spot despite entering Thursday on a four-game losing streak.
The most precarious position belongs to San Diego.
The Padres are 78-68 and have won four straight, but Arizona is only a half-game behind at 78-69. San Diego begins a road series against San Francisco on Friday, while the Diamondbacks host Texas. Pittsburgh has quietly moved back to .500 by winning three consecutive games, but the Pirates remain five games behind San Diego. Miami and St. Louis are each 6.5 games out, leaving them with little room for another losing stretch.

Biggest MLB playoff races to watch
The final NL wild-card spot is the closest postseason race in baseball. San Diego has only a half-game cushion over Arizona, making every result meaningful during the final weeks. The final AL wild-card position is nearly as unsettled. Cleveland is holding off Toronto, Texas and Baltimore, but the Guardians also remain within striking distance of the White Sox in the AL Central.
That gives Cleveland two possible paths into the postseason. The Guardians could overtake Chicago and earn a division title, or hold onto the final wild-card berth. The AL West creates another layer of uncertainty. Houston leads Texas by two games, but a Rangers surge could alter both the division and wild-card brackets.
The Yankees and Red Sox are in stronger positions, yet seeding remains important. The team that claims the top wild-card spot would host a potential rivalry series.
Milwaukee and Los Angeles appear headed toward a battle for the National League’s No. 1 seed. Atlanta and Philadelphia still have business to settle in the NL East.
