Pep Guardiola once named Marcus Rashford as the one Manchester United player he’d have taken at Manchester City during his tenure.
Guardiola joined City as Rashford was just breaking through to the first team at Old Trafford, after which he quickly became an integral member of the senior squad.

Speaking to Rio Ferdinand recently, Ryan Giggs disclosed a conversation he had with the former City boss, who called time on his reign at the end of 2025/2026 after nine years at the club.
The chat took place at a dinner event along with Sir Alex Ferguson and some of his friends.
“There’s about eight of us, so he [Ferguson] sat me next to Pep. This was about, I’m going to say, about eight or nine years ago,” Giggs recounted. “I’ve gone to Pep and said, you know, ‘Who do you like at United?’, He went, ‘Well, who do you think?’
“So I went, [David] de Gea? He went, ‘No’. Luke Shaw? He was just like, ‘No’. He said, ‘The best player at Man United, Marcus Rashford. I would take him tomorrow’. And that just made me think, what’s he seeing, Pep? And that was obviously [viewing Rashford] as a centre forward.”

The Carrington graduate is back plying his trade at his boyhood club this campaign after a year-and-a-half away from M16.
His half-season spell with Aston Villa marked the first-ever time in Rashford’s career that he had represented another team, and that was followed by him spending 2025/2026 on loan with Barcelona.
Rashford sits 13th-placed in United’s all-time top goalscorer rankings with 138 to his name, so he’ll now be looking to kick on and move up the list.
He has started the last two Premier League fixtures under Michael Carrick and earned widespread praise for his showing in last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Everton.

Micah Richards and Gary Lineker hailed the 28-year-old as ‘outstanding’, while journalist Samuel Luckhurst claimed that he was United’s best forward – despite being withdrawn in the 70th minute.
