Both coaches give their thoughts on UCLA's fourth quarter Swag Surf

At the most critical point in Saturday’s Week 1 win over Cal, the UCLA Bruins looked as laid back as ever heading into the fourth quarter of a game 24-24 before pulling away in the game's closing quarter. 

UCLA danced all over the California Memorial Stadium sideline as the game headed into the fourth. More specifically, they Swag Surfed. Not to blame Cal not dancing but UCLA certainly looked like the more relaxed team in the fourth quarter. The Bruins scored three touchdowns while forcing two turnovers and two more turnovers on downs.

The TV broadcast kicked off the fourth quarter with an interview with UCLA head coach Bob Chesney, where he clamored for a stop from the UCLA defense. UCLA’s defense got just that thanks to a fourth down stop. The Bruins would go on to rush in three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, finishing the game with six scores on the ground.

Cal head coach Tosh Lupoi was asked about his takeaways from the impromptu UCLA dance party.

“Don’t plan on us dancing, but do plan on us executing at a higher level.” Lupoi said.

Unsurprisingly, Chesney had a different interpretation. 

“That’s pretty organic. I don’t think anybody set that up. We didn’t talk about that. I think you’re just watching people that love playing this game,” Chesney said. “They have a ton of joy out there and love the people they’re doing it with.”

Chesney’s diagnosis is that the vibes of this UCLA team are just too high to not Swag Surf. After a 3-9 season in 2025 and a complete overhaul of the program, there was plenty to Swag Surf about for the Bruins.
