The shops where SASSA grant recipients can buy affordable chicken

SASSA grant recipients don’t have to hunt for the best deals when doing their shopping this month.
We’ve compared chicken prices at four major national retailers and dozens of regional retailers to find the best promotions.

Affordable Chicken at Major Retailers
Currently, the lowest price per kilogram at one of South Africa’s major retailers is Makro.
The retailer is selling a 5 kilogram bag of Individually Quick Frozen (IQF) chicken for R198.95.
This works out to R39.80 per kilogram.
But Shoprite and Pick ‘n Pay are a very close second, only being 19 cents more expensive per kg than Makro.
Shoprite
In all major metros, Shoprite is currently running a promotion on Farmer’s Choice IQF chicken portions: 5 kgs for R199.99 (R39.99 per kg)
In Cape Town and Durban, the County Fair and Grain Field brands are on promotion for the same price.
To get the deal, buyers will need to swipe their Xtra Savings card.
Pick ‘n Pay
Pick ‘n Pay’s 5-kilogram bag of No Name frozen chicken braaipack is R199.95 nationwide.
The price of fresh chicken also ranges from R59.99 to 65.99 per kilogram.
Makro
Makro has multiple deals on chicken.
The retailer currently has a promotion on its Econo brand of IQF chicken: 5 kgs for R198.95 (R39.80 per kg)
There’s also a 16-piece fresh chicken braai pack for R60 per kilogram.
Then there’s the New Era brand of frozen IQF chicken thighs; two 5-kilogram packs are selling for R460.
Checkers
The cheapest bag of IQF chicken at Checkers is the Goldi brand of mixed portions, which sells for R254.99 (R50.99 per kg).
The product is available in Gauteng branches.
A fresh chicken braai pack costs R69.99 per kilogram.
But in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, the same pack is R64.99 per kilogram.

Many regional supermarkets and discount retailers have reduced chicken prices to offer shoppers value.
Econofoods
Econofoods has two promotions on their IQF chicken, available online and in some stores.
The 5-kilogram bag of Grainfield IQF chicken is R189.95 (R37.99 per kg), and the same-size bag of Rainbow chicken is R194.95 (R38.99 per kg).
They have store locations in Cape Town (Somerset West and Durbanville) and Johannesburg (Cresta Shopping Centre).
- Uitkyk Vleismark (Pretoria): The shop has 5 kilograms of IQF chicken portions for R229.95 (R45.99 per kg).
- Dawood Megastore (Durban): Shoppers can get a 10-pack of fresh whole chicken sold for R39.99 per kg
