“You Can See the Pain in His Eyes”: Fans React As Mark Pope Addresses Kentucky After Big Transfer Portal Disappointment
· Yahoo Sports
The transfer portal hasn’t been very kind to Mark Pope and Kentucky. Pope’s program has suffered multiple rejections this year despite a lucrative NIL budget of $22 million. On Monday, another name was added to the list.
Missouri forward Mark Mitchell decided against joining Kentucky after committing to Pope’s team. He is set to return to Missouri after the SEC threatened severe penalties over conference transfer rules. Mitchell sought an extra year of eligibility, but ultimately backed out after missing the primary transfer window.

Just a few hours after the news of Mitchell’s decision broke, Pope addressed his team. Fans connected his speech and emotion to the most recent rejection. Some praised the coach’s passion, while others didn’t believe him.
“You can see the pain in his eyes as he tries to convince these guys he believes in them after getting dumped today by Mitchell,” one said.
Mitchell became the fourth player to turn down the Wildcats this offseason. Michigan State transfer Jaxon Kohler chose BYU. Syracuse transfer Donnie Freeman committed to St. John’s, and Tyran Stokes went to Kansas.
Mark Pope’s motivating speech
Pope motivated his players with some inspirational words before the practice session on Monday.
“The great thing about sport is that nobody is going to give you anything. You never look for a break. You’re just going to take everything that you want. You have to go take it and earn it. There are no shortcuts, there’s no easy way. You just eat what you kill. That’s it,” Pope said.
He told his players that nobody will do them a favor or give them a break and that they must fight for success and work hard to achieve their goals.
