Christian Yelich gives honest take on Pat Murphy’s benching of Cooper Pratt

The Milwaukee Brewers made Cooper Pratt’s at bat the subject of an early controversy Tuesday night against the New York Mets. The rookie infielder sent a high fly ball into the outfield that dropped for a single, but he barely had time to settle at first before the team took him out of the game.

The decision to take Pratt out of the lineup caught plenty of attention, especially since the rookie did reach first safely on the play. Some believed Pat Murphy was unhappy that Pratt did not try to stretch the hit into a double. Christian Yelich, however, suggested there was a bigger message behind the move, pointing to Murphy’s emphasis on accountability and the standards he has established within the Brewers clubhouse.
“You couldn’t coach that way throughout the league. You really couldn’t. There’s a lot of players that wouldn’t accept that. It’s easier to get buy-in because of the amount of games we’ve won and how we’ve won,” Yelich remarked via MLB.com.

However, the Brewers manager made it clear that the decision to remove the rookie was not based solely on that play against the Mets.
“I think a ball that was up there that long, and hit [the ground] and kicked [away], you have to be on second. Then I was ticked about the bunt thing, and there’s a couple of other things that add to all of this that I don’t need to get into. But if you lived in the clubhouse, you would understand it,” remarked the Brewers manager.
