Starting pitcher Taj Bradley just made history for the Minnesota Twins franchise. Tasked with keeping the Twins in the game after allowing the Athletics to score two runs in the second inning, Bradley did more than that in the fifth inning of play. The 25-year-old recorded the first immaculate inning in the history of the franchise, throwing just nine pitches to record three strikeouts.

Bradley faced Carlos Cortes, Brian Serven, and then leadoff hitter Henry Bolte in order. Cortes already homered off of Bradley earlier in the game, driving in the Athletics’ two runs on the night, but the Twins starter made quick work of him this time around. After throwing two fastballs for strikes early in the at-bat to establish himself, Bradley launched a nasty splitter that fell way below the plate which got Cortes chasing for the third strike.

Serven then came to the plate with only one intention in mind: to swing at the ball and hopefully put the ball in play. Instead, all three of the Athletics catcher’s swings whiffed — with the Twins starter fooling Serven with a curveball for the second out of the inning.

Bolte, meanwhile, looked to work more of a patient at-bat against Bradley. But this just worked against the Athletics center fielder. The Twins starter threw three consecutive called strikes to finish up an inning that ended on a blur.

Alas, the Athletics bounced back in a big way against Bradley the following inning. After Bradley got the first two outs of the inning, he proceeded to allow three consecutive hits — a single, a double, and then another single — which has now put the Twins four runs behind the Athletics.

Bradley’s stuff is electric, but it’s consistency on the mound that he needs to work more on. He has now allowed four earned runs in 5.2 innings of work, and it stands to reason that the Twins will pull him from the mound when, or if, he gets through the final batter of the half-inning.
