During the New York Mets’ game against the San Diego Padres at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y., on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026, fans in the bleachers spotted a tiny hand slipping through a hole in the stands to grab leftover food scraps, mainly peanut shells.
In the viral footage, captured by Scott Reynolds, the curious paw could be seen rising up from the hole and grabbing at shells. Later in the video, Reynolds and friends helped the raccoon nab a hot dog lying next to the hole by pushing it in, then offered another — both of which slid into the concrete hole effortlessly.
A hotdog sliding into a concrete holes surrounded by peanut shells“We soon realized that it was a raccoon,” Reynolds said of the amusing moment. “We laughed and enjoyed the extra show.”
The timing was fitting, as the raccoon seemed to find the reliably good ballpark food more rewarding than the Mets’ season has been for fans. Despite carrying the highest payroll in Major League Baseball this year, according to OutKick, the team has struggled at home.
The opportunistic raccoon tickled many people online, with viewers calling the raccoon a rat in disguise and commenting on the price of hot dogs at the New York City stadium. “It’s a rat wearing a raccoon glove, NYC rats are crafty!” one person commented. “That’s like a $15 hotdog 😂😂😂,” another added.
Others were more concerned about the raccoon, noting that few people questioned how it got under the seats or how it would get out. Many also raised concerns about its hydration, joking that fans should bring it water (and more food) next time.
It seems many New Yorkers won that night, between the raccoon and the Mets, who won the game 4-2.
