Panvel Civic Body To Host 1st Kharghar Hill Mayor's Marathon; 5,000 Register So Far

Mumbai: The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to organise its first-ever Kharghar Hill Mayor's Marathon on August 23, offering runners the challenge of completing a full 42.195-km marathon across the undulating terrain of the Kharghar hills. The event has already received an enthusiastic response, with around 5,000 participants registering on the official website so far.

While the distance matches that of the Mumbai Marathon, the Kharghar event is expected to be significantly more demanding due to its steep ascents and descents through the hill ranges, making it one of the toughest marathon routes in the region.

Apart from the full marathon, the civic body has also introduced a 21.0975-km half marathon along with 10-km, 5-km and 3-km race categories to encourage wider public participation.

Registration fees range from Rs 100 to Rs 1,350, depending on the race category. PMC is expected to spend around Rs 2 crore on organising the event, with the expenditure being met through a combination of registration fees and municipal funds.

To ensure the safety of participants, four ambulances and medical teams will be stationed at different points along the route. The civic body will also provide 19 water stations and 10 refreshment points to help runners stay hydrated and maintain their energy levels during the race.

Since its formation, PMC has organised several marathons to promote social awareness and public participation. However, this will be the first time the corporation is hosting a full 42.195-km marathon, marking a significant expansion of its sporting initiatives.

Officials expect the event to attract amateur and professional runners from across Maharashtra, with the challenging hill course likely to be a major draw for long-distance marathon enthusiasts.
