A land swap with Myanmar? Unsettled Manipur border fuels speculation

Is New Delhi quietly preparing a landmark Land Boundary Agreement with Myanmar along the sensitive Manipur frontier? Recent statements from the Ministry of External Affairs have sparked intense diplomatic speculation. Pressed on reports of a potential territorial exchange, the Ministry admitted that "certain areas on the border are yet to be settled" and confirmed that bilateral talks are ongoing.

This stance mirrors the diplomatic prelude to India's historic 2015 land swap with Bangladesh. For decades, undemarcated stretches and disputed boundary pillars in Manipur have led to local dissent and security vulnerabilities. With India expediting border fencing and regional infrastructure, resolving these persistent cartographic anomalies has become a key strategic priority.

Could a strategic territorial exchange offer a pragmatic breakthrough? The 2015 pact successfully eliminated stateless enclaves, strengthened national security and stabilised India's eastern frontier. As regional instability persists, a similar negotiated realignment with Naypyidaw could give New Delhi greater control and lasting stability.
