Mark Cuban and Dallas Cowboys have mutual ownership interest
· Yahoo Sports
The Dallas Cowboys are not for sale. And yet here we are talking about a potential buyer in Mark Cuban. Why? Because during a local radio appearance last week Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones, the son of team owner Jerry Jones, said that the organization would be open to potentially selling a minority stake in the team now that the NFL has determined teams can sell to private equity.

The Cowboys selling a small portion of the family business to venture capitalists isn’t very exciting, but there happens to be one rich guy involved in private equity who helped another Dallas professional sports team win a championship this century. That rich guy is Mark Cuban.
Cuban’s Mavericks won the NBA championship in 2011 and then he sold the majority of the team to Miriam Adelson and Patrick Dumont’s family in 2023. Now Cuban runs Harbinger Sports Partners which recently bought a minority stake in the Athletics.

In the wake of Jones’ comment, the Dallas Morning News reached out to Cuban about the possibility of buying a stake in the Cowboys and he said, “I’m sure our Harbinger fund would be open to it.”
Jerry Jones on Mark Cuban
The Dallas Morning News then took that back to Jerry Jones who had this to say:
“That’s exactly why if you’re me, you would be open to that is because of the man,” Jones told The News. “I have all the respect in the world for him and I know what he did for the Mavericks and what he’s done for basketball. He’s in additional to financial boatstreams of your team, you want to associate with the highest quality of [a person] who loves the game and then also at the same time wants to do something about it. Mark leads the way in that.”
Keep in mind that Jones doesn’t have any plans to sell anything right now. This is all just because his family is open to the idea of possibly selling some of the team in the future. And maybe it might happen. With Cuban even! But so what?
Caring about this is just rooting for rich guys to make money together. The only thing Cuban getting a sliver of the Cowboys would do is result in a few extra meaningless articles about things the Cowboys might do in free agency. Cuban owns 27% of the Mavericks and still oversees basketball operations and he didn’t have the power to stop the team from trading Luka Doncic.
His private investment funding getting 10% of the Cowboys would make him money in the long run and gain him access to the same seat next to Jerry Jones in the owner’s box that Stephen A. Smith was invited to sit in last year. That’s about it.

Cuban would be allowed to talk in the meetings, but the team will continue to be run by Jerry Jones until Jerry Jones is no more. Then who really knows what will happen to the Cowboys.
According to Forbes, the Cowboys are worth about $13 billion. They’re the most valuable sports team on the planet. There are plenty of rich guys who would love to get their foot in the door, but Cuban checks both local and national news boxes so expect the Jones family to really think about considering the possibility of him becoming an investor over the coming months.
