Daily chess match with Fangio is shaping Eagles' offense during camp

PHILADELPHIA — Sean Mannion is not merely charting whether the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense completes a pass or gains yards during training camp. He is studying how Vic Fangio’s defense reacts before and after every snap. The daily exchange has become a chess match between Philadelphia’s first-year offensive coordinator and one of the NFL’s most influential defensive coaches.

“You’re scripting things in practice, and then you’re studying how our defense is responding to them,” Mannion said.
Fangio’s defensive principles have spread across the league, allowing Philadelphia to test formations, motions and route combinations against concepts the Eagles may encounter during the regular season. Mannion can examine whether a motion changes the coverage, moves a defender or reveals information about the defense’s intentions. The response can help create the next play. If a formation forces the defense to adjust predictably, the Eagles can build a complementary run, route or play-action concept designed to exploit that movement.
“Is there something we can build off of?” Mannion said. “That formation or that motion or that route distribution?”
Not every answer will carry from one opponent to another. Defensive coordinators have adopted elements of Fangio’s system while adding their own coverage rules, pressure packages and personnel preferences. Mannion said Philadelphia’s plan must account for those differences each week. That makes the training camp competition valuable without turning it into a direct preview of every opponent. Fangio forces the offense to diagnose disguise, communicate before the snap and adjust when the expected look changes. The work should also benefit Philadelphia’s defense. Mannion’s increased use of motion, varied formations and under-center looks creates its own challenges for Fangio’s players.
Neither side needs to win every summer rep. The greater value comes from understanding why a concept succeeded or failed and determining what adjustment should follow. For Mannion, practicing against Fangio provides a daily laboratory. The Eagles can test an idea, study the defensive response, and begin constructing the counter they may need during the season.
