New York Giants' Jaxson Dart taking more snaps under center this summer

New York Giants second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart's continued growth and development are a primary goal at training camp this summer. The Giants need him to hone his skills further and solidify his fundamentals if they are to ask him to take them to the next level.

One noticeable thing is that Dart is taking more snaps directly from under center rather than from the shotgun.

"I don't know how much he's done it, but he looks good doing it," head coach John Harbaugh said this week.

Not much. According to PFF, Dart took 87 percent of his dropbacks from the shotgun last year as a rookie. He had just 46 dropbacks from under center. That looks like it's going to change this year.

"It hasn't been an issue at all. I would say, under center in the passing game, it does really discipline your footwork because the drops are so important under center," Harbaugh added. "I think it enhances – he would tell you it helps even in the gun, in the pistol, or whatever. It's just another element. It's part of our offense, what our offense is going to be. We're going to be in various elements of it. That’s one of them."

A veiled way of saying that Dart's mechanics and footwork were a mess last year, especially from the shotgun. His accuracy, especially on deep routes, needs work, to say the least. This will help.

The Giants also want Dart to cut down on his unplanned runs from the pocket, most likely to keep him from harm. By keeping him under center and forcing him to drop back, he may be less inclined to take off running and more inclined to follow through with the called play.

"There are a few things mechanically that are different," Dart told reporters this week about his taking more snaps from under center. "Probably just the biggest thing is a little bit of footwork landmarks in the pocket. But we've repped the hell out of it, I'm feeling really good with the track that we're on, and I'm feeling comfortable.

"It's not something out there when I'm on the field that I have to think extra about when I'm having a rep at a certain play. It's more, obviously, just about getting the rep from a conceptual standpoint, getting on time with all the guys. It's been something that we've really pushed and really got a ton of reps at this offseason."
