Kooper Deputy’s quest for gold at the United World Wrestling U17 Freestyle World Championships came to a controversial end in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Friday with a 10-7 loss to India’s Aaryan in the quarterfinal round.
The 16-year-old from New Paris trailed the Indian, who competes under a mononym, 10-5 with 25 seconds remaining. The U.S. Open champion worked a half-nelson and an arm bar but couldn’t turn Aaryan until just over a second remained in the bout. The Indian turned at that point, and a screenshot from video appears to show Aaryan’s shoulders completely flat on the mat with a second remaining on the clock.

Deputy was awarded two points for exposure but not the fall, and a pin cannot be challenged so the decision stood, giving Aaryan a 10-7 victory.
Deputy can still medal in the tournament. He’ll need Aaryan to reach the championship match to be pulled into the repechage, which Americans often refer to as the consolation bracket.
Aaryan avenged an Asian championships loss to Amirali Ragheb by throttling the Iranian 10-0 in the opening round, then stunned European champion Huseyn Rzazade of Azerbaijan with a late comeback for a 6-5 victory.
Having already beaten Ragheb and Rzazade – two of the favorites in the bracket – Aaryan will face Ukraine’s Volodymyr Boiko later Friday in the semifinal round.
Aaryan controlled the action for most of the match against Deputy, scoring a step-out point in the first 13 seconds, then adding a nice stepover for two exposure points. A second step-out point made it 4-0 before Deputy was able to throw a leg in for a takedown that cut the deficit to two points at the break.
The Indian wrestler scored another takedown and had a cradle locked up, but Deputy was able to get exposure points out of the move to make it 6-4.
Aaryan added four more points with a beautiful duck under before Deputy reversed him for a point, which led to the final frantic sequence.
After a first-round bye, Deputy beat Germany’s Bogdan Sapojnic 12-0 in 1:42. Deputy scored a takedown in the opening 30 seconds, then turned Sapojnic with a gut wrench. He followed that with a snapdown and go-behind plus a trapped-arm gut wrench for an 8-0 lead a little more than a minute into the match. Deputy showcased his strength on the match-ending takedown. His shot from distance left him overextended, but he was able to use his length and strength to pull both of the German’s legs in, lift him and take him straight to his back for four points.
A fifth-place finisher in the European championships, Sapojnic had beaten Egypt’s Ahmed Abdalla Ahmed Ali Saleh 4-0 in the opening round.
