It appears the airport is entering a second significant revitalization phase.

On Tuesday, Toronto Pearson International Airport announced a $1.5-billion revitalization plan for both terminals 1 and 3.

“We’re elevating the travel experience so Toronto Pearson can continue its part in fueling Canada’s economy by welcoming more passenger growth and offering better customer experience,” Pearson president and CEO Deborah Flint said in a news release.

Further modernize

The program will modernize aging infrastructure, while creating a better airport experience for millions of travellers. Pearson is attempting to iron out some of the kinks in the travel experience, thereby helping passengers move through the airport in a smoother manner, while also strengthening airport operations.

Tangible improvements will be seen in the expanded terminal spaces, along with better baggage processing, modernized check-in areas, advanced security screening and more in-terminal charging stations.

“This investment marks another significant milestone in Pearson LIFT and demonstrates our momentum in modernizing Pearson that will meet customer expectations,” Flint said. “We’re elevating the travel experience so Toronto Pearson can continue its part in fueling Canada’s economy by welcoming more passenger growth and offering better customer experience.”

Pearson LIFT (Long term Investment in Facilities and Terminal) is a multi billion-dollar investment, consisting of three major programs designed to address immediate passenger growth demands while readying Canada’s largest airport for the future of air travel.

Construction will take place in stages so that the airport can continue to operate safely and minimize disruption for passengers.

The contract has been awarded to Norr-Dialog and PCL Construction. A completion date was not released.

The revitalization program marks the second major announcement of the Pearson LIFT project. In May, the airport broke ground on a $3-billion investment aimed at airfield modernization in order to deliver a better, more efficient airport experience for passengers, airlines and trade partners.
