Anthony Edwards Counts Timberwolves Out of LeBron James Sweepstakes

LeBron James still hasn't decided where he'll play basketball at in the 2026-27 season as the season draws closer with every passing day.

Ahead of free agency, LeBron informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he would not be returning after eight seasons, and other teams started to line up to sign arguably the greatest player of all time. 

LeBron's agent Rich Paul later revealed that the Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs, Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets, Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, Miami Heat, and Philadelphia 76ers were the eight teams LeBron had narrowed it down to. 

The Cavaliers, Warriors, 76ers, and Heat seem to have the inside track nearly three weeks into free agency with the other four falling behind. 

Anthony Edwards Speaks

Speaking to Kyle Ingram at Fanatics Fest, Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards seemed to believe that Minnesota was out of the running. 

“I have nothing to say about it because I’ve seen his top 3 teams, we’re not in it," he said when asked about LeBron's consideration of Minnesota. 

Paul hasn't updated his whiteboard with an official top three, and LeBron has remained mum on his next destination, but all signs point to him going back East or remaining in California, but moving to the Bay. 

On the initial whiteboard, Paul listed Edwards, Jaden McDaniels, Rudy Gobert, and LaMelo Ball as reasons why LeBron would end up in Minnesota. 

Would It Have Worked?

In terms of basketball fit, the Timberwolves were designed to insert LeBron into the starting lineup. 

After trading Julius Randle and Naz Reid, they have a huge gap at the power forward position. They signed Trey Lyles, but he did not play in the NBA last season. 

LeBron would have slotted right in at the four, giving them a strong starting five that could feed off of each other and take a lot of pressure off of LeBron on both ends of the floor. 

The dynamic would work similarly to what LeBron had in Los Angeles, though LaMelo and Edwards don't need the ball in their hands as much as Luka Doncic and might be more willing to move off the ball.

Gobert is also an upgrade over Deandre Ayton in terms of what LeBron likes to do as he'll screen and roll to the rim while also providing a level of rim protection that was missed after Anthony Davis was traded.

Add in Jaden McDaniels, an all-around player who fits in any scenario, and LeBron would've been playing meaningful and competitive basketball.
