The former Bayern Munich coach said his decision came after some consideration with both trusted confidants and people within the German Football Association. “I’ve done a lot of thinking in the days since our elimination and have consulted with trusted individuals both personally and within the federation. The decision was anything but easy for me. My top priority has always been the team’s success. After such a bitter disappointment, they deserve the chance for a fresh start,” read Nagelsmann’s statement (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

Nagelsmann went on and thanked everyone who worked alongside him including coaching staff and players. “I want to thank my coaching staff, the support team, and everyone at the federation who supported us, especially the players with whom I had the privilege of working,” expressed Nagelsmann.

Finally, he also took the chance to thanks fans and all the support they showed during his tenure and especially during the World Cup, of which he expressed his deep disappointment by the result and letting the fans down. “A special thank you also goes to the fans. You carried us, you trusted us, you gave us energy, even during difficult times. It truly pains me that we disappointed you and couldn’t give you any more memorable nights of football at this World Cup. You deserved so much more.”

As for the DFB, the focus will shift to their search for a suitable replacement, as well as, most likely, a complete overhaul of the structures within it. Jürgen Klopp finds himself as the most likely candidate to take over.
