ESPN names three Clemson legends best ever by jersey number

· Yahoo Sports

ESPN released its list of the best college football players ever by jersey number, and three Clemson legends earned the top spot for their respective numbers: Deshaun Watson at number 4, Trevor Lawrence at number 16 and William “Refrigerator” Perry at number 66.

Watson earned the nod at number 4 after one of the greatest stretches in Clemson history. ESPN pointed to his two Heisman finalist seasons, his 420 passing yards in the national championship win over Alabama and the last-second touchdown pass to Hunter Renfrow that gave Clemson its first national title since 1981. Watson finished his Clemson career 32-3 as a starter and helped push the Tigers from elite ACC program into full-blown national dynasty territory.

Lawrence landed the top spot at number 16, beating out a ridiculous group that included Peyton Manning. ESPN highlighted Lawrence’s 34-2 record as Clemson’s starting quarterback, his national championship, 90 touchdown passes, 10,098 passing yards, and the fact that he was elite almost immediately after arriving in Tigertown.

Then there is Perry, who got the nod at number 66. ESPN noted his three All-America honors, ACC Player of the Year selection, Lombardi Award finalist status, and Outland Trophy finalist status. Perry was not just famous for the “Refrigerator” nickname. He was a real monster at Clemson, ranking first among Division I players with 2.45 tackles for loss per game as a senior. He also helped Clemson win the 1981 national championship as a freshman.

Clemson also had two honorable-mention appearances. Terry Kinard was listed among the “three others” for number 43, behind USC legend Troy Polamalu, while Banks McFadden was listed among the “three others” at number 66 behind Perry.

Watson, Lawrence, and Perry all being picked as the best at their positions is another reminder that Clemson’s all-time history is not just recent quarterback glory or a single championship run. It stretches across eras, positions, and styles.
