With Batt leaving Michigan State to become the new Kentucky athletic director, the Wildcats will reportedly be paying the buyout. Pete Thamel of ESPN reported the new contract details for Batt at Kentucky, and noted that Kentucky will also pay his Michigan State buyout.
What is yet to be determined is what that buyout total will be. The buyout total was set to drop from $5 million to $2.5 million when Michigan State president Kevin Guskiewicz announced he would be leaving for Clemson. But technically, Guskiewicz has not officially left Michigan State yet so it's unclear if that buyout will be the full $5 million or $2.5 million at this time.
It was announced earlier this week that Batt would be leaving Michigan State after one year as the Spartans' athletic director for the same gig at Kentucky. The news was surprising at first, but further reports have surfaced that indicated Batt had also applied for similar roles at Virginia Tech, Purdue and Wisconsin since Guskiewicz announced his planned departure.
