Rob Gronkowski may be known for his larger-than-life personality, Super Bowl rings, and party-boy reputation, but the NFL legend has revealed that when it comes to money, he has been surprisingly conservative.

Today, the player-turned-Fox-Sports-analyst has an estimated net worth of $45 million, including a staggering $13 million worth of real estate investments, having been paid tens of millions of dollars during the 11 years he spent playing in the NFL.

But when he started playing as a pro, things looked very different for the rookie, who recently admitted that he spent the earliest days as a professional athlete living in a shared rental property for which he paid just $1,500 a month.

The 37-year-old, who spent the bulk of his career playing with the New England Patriots before moving to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, opened up to Forbes about the very frugal way in which he managed his money during his early years in the NFL, despite having signed a $4.4 million four-year rookie contract with the Massachusetts-based team.

In the clip—which was originally filmed in August but has seen a huge resurgence in interest after being reposted on X recently—Gronkowski admitted that he refused to dip into the bulk of his salary, instead relying solely on the money that he earned from his various marketing and endorsement deals.

That began with a $50,000 advance that he received from his agent, which he ensured would stretch as far as possible.

"My agent gave me a $50,000 advance for what’s going to come in the marketing world for myself," Gronkwoski revealed. "I just had to pay him back within the first $50,000 I made."

Unlike many NFL up-and-comers, Gronkowski did not immediately begin splashing his cash on lavish purchases like houses or sports cars, instead carefully conserving his earnings, while living as "low level" a life as he could.

While he did buy a car, he opted for a used model that was around 2 years old at the time, and rather than buying a home, he chose to move into a rental with a roommate.

"I was able to purchase my first car, which was a 2008 Escalade, and then to be able to pay rent once I got to New England. And then from there on out, I really didn't need any other money," Gronkowski revealed.

"I just lived off my marketing dollars. I was living a low-level life. I had a condo with a roommate that was on the team as well. We're paying $1,500 a month in rent while in the NFL."

The retired athlete explained that he was aware from the earliest days of his career that his time in the NFL might be limited, noting that he wanted to ensure the $4.4 million he earned during his first four years with the Patriots would set him up for life.

"I was very frugal and that's how I got away with it," he said. "Not having any lavish purchases, the first couple years in the league and just banking away what I was making because I truly understood that the NFL stands for 'not for long.'"

The star athlete also explained how he ate and drank for free, adding, "I was getting free meals at the facility. I just kind of needed gas money. You go out, the drinks are free or you pay for one, you get 10 free when you're on the Patriots up in the Boston area."

These days, while he may still eat and drink for free, Gronkowski, who is originally from Amherst, NY, has allowed himself to loosen up a little bit as far as his spending is concerned, amassing a very impressive portfolio of properties that reaches from Miami to Massachusetts to New York City.

The first major purchase that "Gronk" made was a sprawling Mediterranean-style mansion in Tampa, FL, which he purchased for $1.6 million in August 2012, around two years after he began his career with the Patriots.

However, after struggling to find time to visit the home, which he used as an offseason retreat, the football pro sold it just over one year later for the much higher price of $2.1 million.

He candidly opened about his finances, even revealing that his living situation was also surprisingly modest. (Focus on Sport/Getty Images)

Gronkowski lays down roots in New England

That Florida dwelling sparked the beginning of Gronkowski's real estate investment journey, which continued just one year later, when he snapped up his first home base in Massachusetts: a custom-built mansion in Foxboro, which he is reported to have paid around $1 million for.

The impressive property sits at the end of a leafy cul-de-sac, bordered by large hedges that give it plenty of privacy.

Because the dwelling was custom built, there were no listing images shared before Gronkowski purchased the home, but records show that it spans close to 4,500 square feet, features five bedrooms and three bathrooms, and has a glittering swimming pool and spa in the backyard.

Gronkowski then increased his footprint in Foxboro when he snapped up the adjacent dwelling: a three-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home that offers close to 3,300 square feet of living space and helped to turn the NFL star's mansion into a real-life compound.

Aerial images show that the retired athlete has connected the two dwellings by merging their driveways, while also adding a path that leads from the pool area of his main residence to his second abode.

In total, the two properties span just under two acres of land.

Records show that Gronkowski still owns this property, which he purchased via an LLC, and it's understood that he lives there for at least part of the year with his longtime partner, former Patriots cheerleader Camille Kostek.

The former New England Patriot heads south to the Sunshine State

In March 2019, Gronkowski announced that he was retiring from professional football, later revealing that the injuries he had suffered throughout his career had taken a significant toll on his physical and mental health.

"I was not in a good place," he said, according to ESPN. "Football was bringing me down, and I didn't like it. I was losing that joy in life. ... I could play right now if I wanted to play. I'm feeling good.

"Physically, I could do it. Mentally wise, desire-wise, it's not there. ... I am very satisfied with where I am in life right now. I truly believe going through those tough times, nine years, off the field, on the field, has brought me to this point. I believe I'm on the right path in my life."

Four months after making that announcement, Gronkowski made a move down to Florida, where he snapped up a stunning apartment in a high-rise building in Miami.

The incredible corner-unit dwelling, which overlooks Biscayne Bay, offers jaw-dropping city and water views courtesy of the floor-to-ceiling windows and the enormous wraparound balcony.

Records show that the condo apartment features five bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, and actually spans across two separate units that were combined to make one giant spread that offers three private parking spaces, as well as access to the building's many communal amenities, including a fitness center, pool, and valet.

Gronkowski paid $1.7 million for the property, which is now worth upward of $3.6 million, according to Realtor.com® estimates.

Interestingly, less than a year after buying the condo, the football pro announced that he was coming out of retirement to join his former Patriots teammate, Tom Brady, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Gronkowski makes big moves in the Big Apple

Around one month after the football player signed a one-year contract extension with the Buccaneers that was reportedly worth around $10 million, Gronkowski moved his real estate focus further up the East Coast to New York City, where he snapped up a $7 million apartment in a newly built high-rise in Hudson Yards.

The impressive abode offers three bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, according to a report published by the New York Post in April 2021.

Much like his Miami mansion in the sky, Gronkowski's apartment is located at the corner of the building and boasts stunning views of the Manhattan skyline.

The apartment spreads across more than 2,600 square feet and is located in an opulent high-rise that was designed by architect David M. Childs, according to its website.
