Alabama One Win Away From Omaha After Dominant Super Regional Victory Over St. John’s

· Yahoo Sports

Alabama baseball is one win away from Omaha.

In front of the largest crowd ever to pack Sewell-Thomas Stadium, the Crimson Tide delivered one of its most complete performances of the season Saturday afternoon, shutting out St. John’s 8-0 in Game 1 of the Tuscaloosa Super Regional.

Now, Alabama needs just one more victory to punch its ticket to the College World Series for the first time since 1999.

The story of the day started on the mound with Tyler Fay.

The Alabama ace was sensational from the first pitch, keeping the Red Storm offense off balance all afternoon. Fay worked into the eighth inning while allowing just two hits and three walks. He struck out nine batters and never allowed St. John’s to build any momentum.

Every time the Red Storm looked like they might create a scoring opportunity, Fay slammed the door shut.

While Fay dominated on the mound, Alabama’s offense steadily built a lead.

The Crimson Tide struck first thanks to Brennan Holt, who came through with a two-run double to give Alabama an early advantage. That was all Fay really needed, but Alabama wasn't finished.

The game turned for good in the fourth inning when the Tide exploded for four runs. Bryce Fowler delivered a huge two-run double that energized the record crowd, and Alabama took advantage of St. John’s pitching struggles with a pair of bases-loaded walks to stretch the lead.

By the time the inning ended, the Crimson Tide had full control of the game.

Alabama added even more insurance later when Justin Lebron ripped a two-run double, pushing the lead to 8-0 and effectively putting the game out of reach.

The offensive production came from up and down the lineup as Alabama continued to show why it has been one of the most dangerous teams in the country this season. The Crimson Tide combined timely hitting, patience at the plate and strong situational baseball to keep pressure on St. John’s throughout the afternoon.

Perhaps the most impressive part of the win was how complete it was.

Alabama received elite pitching, timely offense and strong defense while never allowing St. John’s to feel comfortable. In a postseason environment where every mistake can be magnified, the Crimson Tide played clean baseball and looked every bit like a team capable of making a deep run.

Now comes the biggest opportunity yet.

Alabama will return to Sewell-Thomas Stadium on Sunday afternoon needing just one more win to advance to the College World Series. St. John’s, meanwhile, will be fighting to keep its season alive and force a deciding third game.

For Alabama, the goal is simple.

One more win.

One more victory and the Crimson Tide will be headed to Omaha for the first time in 27 years.
